5 years into our Sustainability Journey
5 Years into our Sustainability Journey……
Five years ago, Mansfield Pollard embarked on a bold sustainability journey. What began as a commitment to reduce our environmental impact has evolved into a defining pillar of how we do business. Today, as we reflect on five years of being a carbon-negative company, we’re proud of the progress we’ve made and the role we continue to play in shaping a more sustainable future for both manufacturing and the world at large.
Taking Accountability…..
Our sustainability story isn’t just about numbers, although some of those achievements are significant. Over the last five years, we have offset an incredible 4,378 tonnes of CO2e. To put that into perspective, this would equate to planting almost 40,000 trees to sequester the same amount of CO2 over the same period of time. This substantial impact is a result of our unwavering commitment to offsetting not just our current emissions but twice the amount we produce each year:
So why do we offset double? For us, it’s about taking accountability for our past. With a proud 159-year history dating back to 1866, we recognise that the emissions of previous decades cannot be ignored. By doubling our offsets, we are not only addressing our present-day impact but also making up for historical emissions. It’s a strategy rooted in responsibility and a keen awareness of the legacy we want to leave behind.
Every Step Matters…..
We view sustainability as a continuous path, marked by both the moments of significant transformation and the cumulative impact of many smaller decisions. Enhancing our energy efficiency, adopting innovative technologies, and fine-tuning our manufacturing processes have all contributed to a 35% reduction in our location-based CO2e emissions per £m turnover. These are statistics we celebrate, not as an end goal, but as proof that progress is possible when sustainability isn’t an afterthought but a core value.
We understand that sustainability is not a single achievement but a series of intentional, forward-thinking steps. Sometimes, these are leaps, like investing in cutting edge machinery or rethinking operational processes to consolidate manufacturing onto a single site. Other times, they are incremental gains, like improving energy efficiency by small percentages each year. Both are critical, and together, they amount to meaningful change.
Why Sustainability is Key to Manufacturing…..
Manufacturing stands at the crossroads of innovation, resource consumption, and environmental responsibility. Many manufacturing processes are energy-intensive, and traditionally, this has made the industry a contributor to global emissions. This places a significant onus on companies like Mansfield Pollard to lead the way in reimagining what sustainable manufacturing looks like.
The global conversation around sustainability grows louder each year. The call for achieving net zero by mid-century, highlighted in global frameworks such as the Paris Climate Agreement, has brought both challenges and opportunities to the manufacturing sector. For Mansfield Pollard, it’s a challenge we accept wholeheartedly. By embedding sustainability into every aspect of our manufacturing processes, we’re not just keeping up with expectations, we’re setting the standard.
Whether it’s in creating ultra energy-efficient hyperscale data centre cooling technology or supporting a local school through a simple air handling unit refurbishment, our focus is clear. Sustainability isn’t just a commitment; it’s the foundation of our innovation, problem-solving, and purpose.
A Global and Local Context…….
Climate change is a global crisis, and solutions require reaching beyond borders. That’s why Mansfield Pollard partners with organisations that help tackle environmental and social challenges on a worldwide scale.
This year’s offsetting schemes include the Rwandan Cookstove Project. By distributing fuel-efficient stoves to families, this initiative reduces firewood consumption, which lowers carbon emissions while improving health outcomes and easing the burden on communities. Similarly, our support for the Zambian Safe Water Initiative addresses more than water access. By rehabilitating boreholes, we’ve not only reduced the need for carbon-intensive water purification methods but also directly improved the quality of life for countless families.
These projects underscore our belief that sustainability isn’t just about emissions reductions; it’s about driving holistic change across interconnected issues like health, education, gender equality and resource management.
We’ve also taken steps to bring sustainability closer to home and into our community. One such action was joining forces with Oastlers School, where we planted 250 broadleaf saplings. This small but meaningful initiative brought our commitment to life, emphasising the idea that even local, hands-on efforts contribute to the larger mission of environmental stewardship
What Lies Ahead…….
Looking to the future, Mansfield Pollard remains steadfast in our mission to combine growth with environmental responsibility. Our current goals are ambitious yet rooted in the practical steps we’ve taken over the past five years. Moving to a location-based emissions calculation ensures that our metrics are accurate and aligned with our reality, bringing transparency to our operations.
We’ve set our sights on reducing our carbon intensity metric (CO2e per £m turnover) by a further 15%. We aim to do so by continuing to innovate, optimising our existing processes, and aligning our efforts with global sustainability initiatives.
Leaving a Legacy……..
For Mansfield Pollard, our sustainability efforts are as much about legacy as they are about results. Our roots date back to the mid-19th century, but it’s the future we’re focused on. We understand that being operationally responsible today creates a better world for tomorrow.
Sustainability is a shared responsibility, and it’s one we are proud to shoulder. Through large leaps forward, like our carbon-negative achievements, and the steady progression of incremental changes over time, every step has brought us closer to our vision.
Ultimately, our message is this: Sustainability is a journey, and that journey requires commitment, courage, and collaboration. At Mansfield Pollard, we are proud to be walking that path and invite others to join us in building a world where innovation and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.
