The Project

Westmorland General Hospital became an Elective Green Surgical Hub within the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust. These ‘hubs’ have been established to perform more elective surgical operations and reduce the backlog of patients waiting for surgery.

The additional funding through the Elective Recovery Plan secured the hospitals expansion with the addition of two state-of-the-art operating theatres, recovery area, waiting rooms and support facilities for colleagues. With a reputation for providing high quality, energy efficient, HTM 03-01 air handling solutions, Mansfield Pollard was engaged by The James Mercer Group Ltd. to support the hospitals expansion and contribute to the Trust’s Net Zero Green Plan.

The Solution

Three fully HTM 03-01 compliant air handling units were designed, manufactured and installed at Westmorland Hospital, joining the significant number of existing Mansfield Pollard units on site. Reliability and energy efficiency were both key drivers for AHU design and of critical consideration to support the Trust’s Net Zero Green Plan.

Selection of ultra energy efficient EC fans plus the design of an integrated fan array allowed potential redundancy to be designed into the unit ensuring uninterrupted operation in the unlikely event of fan failure via a ‘run and standby’ configuration. EC fans use up to 30% less electricity (on average) than conventional fans and are a key element in maximising levels of energy efficiency. Each fan was fitted with commando sockets and quick release slide out rails to assist maintenance. With access to the plantroom severely restricted, a flatpack solution with separated frame, individualised panels and all component parts was required. A full on-site build and both positive and negative pressure testing ensured the AHU was manufactured to achieve a minimum of class L2 air leakage.

The Highlights

HTM 03-01 2021 Compliant: Fully compliant with the latest HTM 03-01 legislation

Class L2 Air Leakage: On-site AHU casing build & testing to achieve class L2

Run & Standby EC Fans: Offering the ultimate in redundancy, efficiency and low noise levels

Flatpack Solution: Extreme flatpack solution due to limited plantroom access
