The Project

The new £2.5 million state-of-the-art operating theatre at RLI (Royal Lancaster Infirmary) is part of a wider £34 million investment by University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT). The modular theatre has been built to provide additional capacity whilst the existing four other operating theatres at the RLI are being fully refurbished and upgraded to meet stringent modern standards. The theatre incorporates the latest technologies and advanced design to ensure the highest levels of safety, care, experience and performance for both patients and staff

A Partnership Approach:

As recognised hospital and healthcare ventilation specialists, Mansfield Pollard worked in partnership with the Consultant Engineer, Main Contractor and the NHS Trust to provide critical care air handling for the new theatre and surrounding development. Superior technical design capability combined with an in-depth understanding around HTM 03-01 requirements ensured an energy efficient and fully compliant ventilation solution.

The Solution

Mansfield Pollards specialist air handling team were engaged to provide critical air management for a new state-of-the-art gamma camera room, designed to significantly enhance the hospitals diagnostic services.

With continuous operation, quality and energy efficiency being the key project drivers, Mansfield Pollard engineered each AHU to be HTM 03-01 compliant with build in N+1 redundancy.  Outstanding hygiene is guaranteed via extended drain trays, stainless steel & laminate internal panels, tailor made base frames and specialised coils. Each air handling unit was fully built and tested in the factory before being dismantled and shipped flat-pack to be fully reassembled on site. Volumetric and leakage testing (witnessed by the main contractor) ensured proven air volumes and leakage levels to L2 were achieved. As a result of limited plant room space, additional access panels and viewports were designed into the unit to enable safe and efficient unit maintenance. The selection of high efficiency EC fans and inclusion of N+1 redundancy design offered the end user the ultimate in unit energy performance and reliability

The Highlights

HTM 03-01 2021 Compliant: Fully compliant with the latest HTM 03-01 legislation

FAT and Site Tested to L2 Air Leakage: Factory witnessed and site AHU testing to achieve class L2

Run & Standby EC Fans: Offering the ultimate in redundancy, efficiency and low noise levels

Dual Side Access: To facilitate easy maintenance due to limited space
